Roa\, Jr.\, MD is a full professor (Prof 12) of the Department of Physiology of UP College of Medicine. He carries a cross appointment of Clinical Professor and Attending Physician in the Department of Medicine of the Philippine General Hospital. He is a Fellow of the Philippine College of Physicians and the Philippine College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Roa’s clinical background provides focus in his teaching of basic and advanced medical physiology. Likewise\, his mastery of physiology enriches his teaching rounds in the hospital with training residents and fellows. Dr. Roa has over 45 local and international publications to his name including the landmark study that established the normal reference values for lung function tests among Filipinos. He has collaborated in over 30 multinational researches. He has been awarded as Most Outstanding Alumnus of the Cebu Institute of Medicine\, Distinguished Teacher by UP College of Medicine\, Most Distinguished Physician (highest award) by the Philippine College of Physicians\, Most Outstanding Fellow of the Philippine College of Chest Physicians\, and the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Memorial Award by the Philippine Medical Association. He is the Founding Chairman of the Philippine Coalition Against Tuberculosis (PhilCAT). His advocacies in promoting lung health through patient education and TB control through Public-Private Mix garnered for him the Civil Service Commission’s Gawad Lingkod Bayan Award given at the Heroes Hall in Malacanang Palace. Salvana\, MD\, DTM&H\, FPCP\, FIDSA received his medical degree from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in 2001. He trained in internal medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee\, and did his fellowship in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He returned in 2008 as a Balik Scientist of the Department of Science and Technology. He is the Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the National Institutes of Health and is an associate professor of medicine at the Philippine General Hospital. He is also adjunct faculty for Global Health at the University of Pittsburgh. He has been selected as an Outstanding Young Scientist by the National Academy of Science and Technology and has been awarded “The Outstanding Young Men” (TOYM) Philippines award in for medicine and social activism in HIV. He has also been selected as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World\, and a Young Physician Leader of the Interacademy Medical Panel of the World Academy of Sciences.
